Optimist Race Team

No race experience necessary!

While perhaps humble in appearance, the Optimist is one of the largest youth racing fleets in the world!

The Program

We have space for six sailors, aged 8-13 years. For a monthly fee of $225, they'll train in a club-owned Optimist dinghy for two evenings per week. This is a sport in which boys and girls can be equally competitive.

Sailors are welcome to join the team at any point in the season, subject to available space and at the discretion of the coaching staff. Regular attendance is expected, and is integral to a sailor's success and progression.

Schedule

The program will run from July to November, training will take place on Tuesday and Thursday evenings, as well as some additional evenings. Information and any changes or updates made to the schedule will be shared with race team sailors and parents via TeamSnap or email.

Sailors with an appropriate skill level will be able to participate in BC circuit regattas. Sailors are welcome to participate in any, all, or none. Possible regattas will include:

  • 2022 Regattas TBD

Costs for regattas are not included in the price of

the regular program and will be the responsibility of

regatta participants. Parents will be expected to

assist with transportation of sailors and boats.

In addition to regattas, sailors will also be able to participate in training camps with other teams from the Lower Mainland. Dates, cost, and locations for these camps have not yet been finalized.

Our program is able to accommodate and develop sailors of all skill levels, from sailors new to racing to seasoned racers. Through participation in weekly sessions of coached racing and training, sailors will build skill and confidence and develop as individuals and as a race team.

Equipment

Sailors will be sailing in club-owned Optimists, but will be responsible for providing their own personal sailing gear. This will include PFD, whistle, booties, and sailing gloves. We would also recommend a wetsuit, fleece, and spray top for cooler weather. Sailors may be held from participation in training sessions if their gear is not appropriate for the conditions.
